How to Plan a Perfect Engagement Session

June 18th, 2024

As two photographers who have navigated our journey of love, we understand the excitement, nerves, and joy that come with an engagement session. We have put together a few tips to help you prepare for this special moment, so that your love story can be captured in the most authentic and beautiful way.

  1. Outfit
It's essential to feel comfortable and confident in what you're wearing because it really shows in your photos. Choose clothing that represents you and reflect your style as a couple, whether that's casual, formal, or somewhere in between. Complimentary colors are always a good idea, but avoid overly matchy outfits. This way your photos will be more authentic and meaningful. Consider bringing along a backup outfit in case of any wardrobe malfunctions or if you decide to change looks during the shoot.

  2. Hair & Makeup
Don’t forget about your hair and makeup. Consider scheduling a haircut before the shoot to ensure your hair looks its best. Additionally, styling your hair and applying soft makeup can enhance your natural beauty and boost your confidence. Feeling great about your appearance will help you relax and enjoy the session, allowing your true connection to shine through in the photos.

  3. Location
You can choose a location that holds special meaning for you as a couple, like where you first met or a favorite hangout. Alternatively, you can simply select a beautiful place that you both enjoy, such as a scenic park, a charming city street, or a stunning beach. The right location will add a personal touch and enhance the beauty of your photos. But don’t worry too much about it - the location (even the most beautiful) is still just the backdrop for your love.

  4. Time.
The ideal moment for your photoshoot is during the "golden hour," shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. This time of day offers the most flattering, soft, and warm natural light, which enhances the beauty of your photos. But there are plenty of other options, and with your photographer you can find the best light for your session at any time of day. Keep in mind that timing of your photoshoot can also depend on the weather. Overcast days can provide soft, diffused light that’s perfect for photos, while sunny days are best during the golden hour.

  5. Behavior
Be yourselves! Authenticity is key. Laugh, joke and interact as you normally would. When you focus on each other, it creates authentic and beautiful reactions. Relax and have fun! Enjoy the moment and trust your photographer - let him/her guide you and help you feel at ease. Together you’ll create stunning images.

  6. Personal touch
Make your photoshoot truly unique by incorporating elements that reflect your relationship. Bring along props that have special meaning, like a favorite book, a musical instrument, or anything else that tells your story. Including your pets can also add a fun and personal element to your photos. These personal touches help capture the essence of your connection
and make your photos even more meaningful.

  7. Practical tips
Ensure you're well-rested and hydrated before the shoot. Bring along a small bag with essentials like water, snacks, a hairbrush, and makeup for touch-ups. Keep an eye on the weather forecast - if it looks unpredictable, consider bringing along an umbrella or jacket. Plan to arrive a little early to the location to get ready and allow time for any last-minute adjustments.
